Wheelchair-Accessible NEMT

Wheelchair Transportation
in Northern Virginia

Professional, lift-equipped wheelchair transportation for patients across Northern Virginia, Washington DC, and Maryland. Safe securement, trained drivers, and compassionate door-to-door service for every medical appointment.

What is wheelchair transportation?

Wheelchair transportation is a form of Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT) specifically designed for patients who use a manual wheelchair, power wheelchair, or mobility scooter and cannot transfer to a standard vehicle seat for their medical trip. Unlike ambulance service, which is reserved for emergencies, wheelchair NEMT is for routine, scheduled medical appointments — doctor visits, specialist consultations, dialysis sessions, physical therapy, oncology treatments, and more.

Pak Medical Transportation Services operates lift-equipped vehicles throughout Northern Virginia. Our vans use hydraulic or fold-out ramp systems to bring the wheelchair to ground level, and every chair is secured using a WC-19 certified four-point tie-down with an independent lap and shoulder belt. That means your chair stays anchored and you stay protected, even in a sudden stop.

Our drivers are trained in proper wheelchair securement, passenger assistance, and respectful patient handling. We treat every ride as an extension of your medical care — not just a car trip. Whether you live in Manassas, Alexandria, Woodbridge, or anywhere across the Northern Virginia region, we are here to get you to your appointment safely and on time.

Who needs wheelchair transportation?

Wheelchair NEMT serves a wide range of patients and families across Northern Virginia. Here are the most common situations where our service makes a real difference.

Seniors with Power or Manual Wheelchairs

Older adults who rely on power chairs or manual wheelchairs for daily mobility often have no safe way to get to routine medical appointments without a lift-equipped vehicle. We serve seniors throughout the Northern Virginia region with patient, unhurried service.

Patients with Mobility Disabilities

Patients with conditions such as multiple sclerosis, ALS, cerebral palsy, spinal cord injuries, or advanced arthritis may require full-time wheelchair use. We provide consistent, reliable transportation so these patients can attend all their scheduled medical visits.

Dialysis Patients (3x Weekly)

Dialysis patients who use a wheelchair need reliable transportation up to three times per week. Pak Medical can set up a recurring schedule so you never have to worry about missing a critical session. Our drivers understand the importance of consistency and punctuality for dialysis patients.

Post-Surgical Patients

Patients recovering from hip replacements, knee surgeries, or other procedures may be temporarily wheelchair-dependent and unable to ride in a standard car. Our service bridges that gap — from your first post-op visit through your full recovery.

Medicaid NEMT Beneficiaries

Virginia Medicaid members who qualify for NEMT benefits may be covered for wheelchair transportation to eligible medical appointments. We work with transportation brokers and can help guide you through verifying your coverage.

Our wheelchair transportation process

Four simple steps to get you safely to your appointment and back home.

01
Book Your Ride

Call (571) 229-0778 or submit a request online. Share your pickup address, medical facility destination, appointment time, and your wheelchair type (manual, power, or scooter) so we send the right vehicle.

02
Driver Arrives with Lift

Your driver arrives at your door with a lift-equipped vehicle at the scheduled time. They will come to your door to assist you to the vehicle — you won't be waiting at the curb.

03
Safe, Certified Securement

Once inside the vehicle, your wheelchair is anchored using a WC-19 four-point tie-down system. You are then secured with a lap belt and shoulder harness before we begin moving.

04
On-Time Arrival

We take the optimal route to your medical facility and plan departure time to ensure you arrive on schedule. After your appointment, we return to pick you up and bring you home safely.

Frequently asked questions about wheelchair transportation

We transport manual wheelchairs, power wheelchairs, and mobility scooters. Our vehicles are equipped with hydraulic lifts and WC-19 certified four-point securement systems that safely anchor all standard wheelchair sizes and power chairs. If you have an oversized or bariatric chair, contact us before booking so we can confirm the right vehicle for your needs.
No, a companion is not required. Our drivers are trained to assist wheelchair users throughout the entire trip — from your front door to the medical facility lobby and back. If you prefer to bring a caregiver or family member, they are welcome to ride along at no extra charge.
Many Medicaid plans in Virginia cover NEMT services, including wheelchair transportation, for eligible members going to covered medical appointments. Coverage is typically arranged through a transportation broker. We work with these brokers and can help you navigate the process. Private pay and self-pay options are always available as well.
We recommend scheduling at least 24–48 hours in advance for routine appointments. Same-day service may be available depending on driver and vehicle availability in your area — call our dispatch at (571) 229-0778 for same-day inquiries. For recurring appointments like dialysis, we set up a standing schedule so you only have to book once.
