Stairchair Assistance & NEMT

Electric Stairchair Transportation
in Northern Virginia

Safe, dignified stairchair assistance for patients who cannot navigate stairs in their home. Combined with NEMT transport — one call gets you down the stairs and to your medical appointment.

What is electric stairchair transportation?

Electric stairchair transportation combines two services into one coordinated trip: stairchair assistance to help a patient safely descend (or ascend) stairs in their home, followed by NEMT transport to their medical appointment. Many patients in Northern Virginia live in townhomes, row houses, multi-level apartments, or older homes without elevators — and a staircase that was once easy to navigate has become an obstacle to accessing medical care.

The electric stairchair itself is a motorized chair device that a trained operator places alongside the staircase. The patient is positioned in the chair, secured safely, and carried up or down the stairs under controlled power. It is quiet, smooth, and designed specifically to keep the patient comfortable and protected throughout the movement. Patients do not have to attempt stairs while fatigued, in pain, or unsteady — and family members do not have to attempt dangerous manual carries.

Pak Medical Transportation Services sends certified stairchair operators as part of your transport pickup. After assisting you down (or up) the stairs, we continue with your NEMT trip to your medical facility. The same assistance is provided when we return you home. All in one service call, with one point of contact — our dispatch team at (571) 229-0778.

Who needs electric stairchair transportation?

Stairs become a real barrier for many patients — and in Northern Virginia, multi-floor homes are extremely common. Here are the situations where this service makes a meaningful difference.

Multi-Floor Homes Without Elevators

Row houses, townhomes, and older apartments are prevalent throughout Northern Virginia — in Alexandria, Arlington, Manassas, and beyond. When a patient on an upper floor can no longer safely navigate stairs, getting to a medical appointment becomes genuinely difficult without stairchair assistance.

Post-Hip or Knee Surgery Recovery

Patients recovering from hip replacements, knee replacements, or other lower-extremity surgeries are often on strict weight-bearing restrictions. Attempting stairs independently carries a real risk of falls and re-injury. Stairchair assistance removes that risk entirely during the recovery period.

Stroke Survivors

Stroke can cause muscle weakness, balance impairment, and unsteady gait on one or both sides of the body. Even a short staircase can be a major hazard. Stairchair transport restores safe access to medical appointments without putting the patient at risk.

Elderly Patients with Arthritis or Joint Pain

Advanced osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or severe joint pain can make every step up or down a staircase painful and unsteady. Stairchair assistance allows elderly patients to continue attending their medical appointments without the pain and danger of navigating stairs independently.

Wheelchair Users in Non-Elevator Buildings

Some patients use wheelchairs but live in buildings without lifts. If they live on an upper floor, getting out of the building at all requires special assistance. In these cases, stairchair transport may be combined with wheelchair NEMT for the road portion of the trip.

How stairchair transport works

A coordinated, step-by-step approach from your front door to your medical appointment and back.

01
Book & Describe Your Home

When you call to schedule, describe your staircase — number of flights, straight or turning, approximate width. This helps us confirm the right equipment and crew for your home.

02
Certified Operator Arrives

Our trained stairchair operator arrives at your home at the scheduled time. They assess the staircase, position the chair equipment, and explain what will happen before anything begins.

03
Safe Descent or Ascent

The patient is comfortably seated in the stairchair and secured. The operator guides the chair up or down the stairs at a controlled pace. The patient simply sits — no effort or weight-bearing required.

04
Continue Your Medical Trip

Once at ground level, transport begins in our NEMT vehicle to your medical appointment. After your visit, we return you home and assist you back up the stairs the same way.

What to Have Ready When You Call
Number of stair flights and direction (up/down)
Approximate staircase width
Whether stairs are straight or have a turn

Frequently asked questions about stairchair transportation

An electric stairchair is a motorized chair device that travels alongside a staircase. A trained operator positions the patient in the chair, secures them safely, and uses the controls to carry them up or down the stairs. It is designed for patients who cannot walk stairs independently and provides a much safer alternative than being physically carried by helpers.
Our operators can assess most standard residential staircases. For very narrow or unusually curved stairs, we recommend contacting us before your appointment so we can discuss your specific situation. In most cases we can still assist; in rare cases where the stairs are incompatible, we will help you explore alternative solutions.
Our stairchair service is offered as part of a complete NEMT trip. When you book transportation, simply let us know you require stairchair assistance. We send a properly equipped team to your pickup location, assist you down the stairs, and transport you to your medical appointment — all in one coordinated service.
Yes. The stairchair service is available for both the outbound trip and the return home. Our driver or attendant will assist you back up the stairs upon your return so you can get home safely and comfortably after your appointment.
